Soft, velvety, a little nostalgic: the powdery note recalls the gesture of powdering one’s face, a grandmother’s compact, the touch of a powder puff. But what is a powdery water, and why is it so dear to Maison Dorin?

The powdery note, a memory of rice powder

In perfumery, a fragrance is called “powdery” when it evokes the texture and scent of make-up powders: a soft, dry, enveloping impression, both clean and sensual. This facet often comes from iris, violet, heliotrope or certain musks, which give the perfume its “velvet” touch.

A powdery water combines this softness with the lightness of an eau: a luminous, delicate perfume that is easy to wear every day.

A story of powders

If Maison Dorin loves powdery notes so much, it is because it was born of powders and make-up. In 1780 it became supplier to the Court of Versailles for its loose rice powders and make-up; later, Un Air de Paris rice powder became a must for every Parisienne, and La Dorine powder, created in 1893, conquered the world in its compact box. We tell this adventure in the story of Maison Dorin.

The house’s five Eaux Poudrées

Les Eaux Poudrées collection pays tribute to this heritage with five floral fragrances built around flowers that symbolise French tradition:

  • Cloches de Mai, the lily of the valley of May Day, a lucky charm that, according to legend, King Charles IX offered to the ladies of the court;
  • Gardenia Garden, a garden of gardenias under a tropical rain softened by a powdery haze;
  • Pétales de Camélia, the flower made fashionable by Joséphine de Beauharnais, with mandarin and grapefruit notes on a patchouli base;
  • Rose des Bois, a wild rose rooted in a damp wood;
  • Lys d’Or, the lily of the kings of France, between the softness of powder and the freshness of water.

Other powdery perfumes from the house

The powdery signature runs through several Dorin creations: Dorina, a powdery iris, Versailles 1780, which pairs powdery violet with almond and peach, and Un Air de Paris, whose iris accord carries the house’s fine powdery note.

Who are powdery perfumes for?

For lovers of softness and elegance, for those who like perfumes that stay close to the skin, like a second nature. To discover them with confidence, most come in an 8 ml size, such as Rose des Bois 8 ml or Lys d’Or 8 ml.
